I am having a bloom of MTS all of a sudden after never having seen one in 8 years. The problem is that these guys are getting into my wet dry and then into the pump. Ive reduced feeding but need a better solution. I have heard loaches, but i would need some large ones i am assuming. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To add a little more to this. The tank is on automatic feeders and like i said has been running for 8 years with no snails and never a problem. The only thing i have changed in the past 6 months was the food... Switched to NLS. Its a 300g tank with 30 or so african cichlids. I have added fish from all kinds of places but stopped buying from LFS stores a number of years back bc the ones around me do not have much besides the basic assorted african mix. Now mostly buy through hobbiest and The last fish introduced was 4 months ago from another tank in my house which has no trace of any snails. No clue how theses got here or how to control them. Please help me out.

Must have been some eggs or small MTS in the water from the LFS or other hobbyists or they may have been dormant in small numbers and recent overfeeding has caused an infestation? Normally I would suggest assassin snails, but with Africans I would say the best way would be to hire some loaches or considering its just fish in this tank you could use some medicine that kills snails.

If the tank is 76-78 degrees a dojo loach or golden dojo loach would help out. Toss a couple in, and watch em decimate the snail population. Youd need around a 5-6 inch dojo for them to make an impact. I used to get dozens of snails at the lfs when I actually wanted them. One time I dumped over 100 snails in, my two dojos had them gone in under a week.

You dont need to add more fish to get rid of snails...

Get an empty bottle, place some cucumber in there and leave it in the tank overnight and remove the snails in the morning and repeat as necessary..

That's a good idea except I am not always home, that's why the tank is on automatic feeders. Since they keep clogging my pump I need a more natural method that doesn't involve me cleaning them out everyday. I do clean them out when I get a chance but if I'm not there, they can get out of hand.

In that case fair enough... Cant argue with that :)
