Ya I'm not sure what I have in there now it came with tank? Familiar? Any good??

Are you water parameters failing? Why do you feel you need more bio. Most effective is to run just sponges, biomax and clean the filters more frequently.

@ Brian, i have new substrate for 1 thing and ya 2 weeks ago I spent 2 weeks doing water changes every other day due to ammonia spike. I'm just really getting into hobby even though I took a crack at saltwater for awhile and grew up taking care of common FW fish. I rescued a large oscar as well and he is putting a load on tank. He is going to find a new home!! I just cleaned both filters today because I hadn't touched them while I was having water problems (probably for a month). I rinsed sponge good in both filters but did not touch the 2 bags of bio at all. I also did about a 40% water change. Water is kind of cloudy still after @ 4hours but I haven't tested anything yet.

what i did was put a pre filter on the intake and just packed the inside with ceramic media and filter floss ontop.

Thanks for Input! Thats what I was thinking of doing. By pre filter you mean a sponge basically? What part Vegas you from? I lived there for 18 years but now I'm in Norcal..
