Help with my Kenyi please!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't keep just 2 male kenyi together. but for now, you need a lot of things in tank to really break up the 'line of sight'. Every time the dominant kenyi sees the submissive one out he'll beat it 'out of territory'. sight breaks help disrupt the dominant's chase, & give the loser more options: laying behind the heater isn't a good one ;-)

When I bought them I asked the LFS for 1 male 2 females I lost one and the others turned out to be males. Luck of the draw I guess. Luckily I have not seen much aggression towards the other fish.

I can admit my aquascaping is lacking I just upgraded from a 40 gal to the. Big tank and using all the decorations from the 40 s I do have a lot of space to be filled.

all young kenyi are blue. males get yellow with maturity and dominance. it's easy to end up with incorrect sexes from stores. if you really want a kenyi harem, it takes management & waiting to find actual females.
males can retain and/or revert to blue to lessen aggression from dominant males.
I doubt you will enjoy keeping the 2 males, since you have a mixed community.

You need to either find a store that specializes in african mbunas and sells them older, or mature a group & get rid of any males yourself, or buy females from a dedicated keeper.

Re: aquascaping, for 2 male kenyi that might not work. Dom males are extremely focused on getting around things to their Target. Just when you think arrangements are working, they've memorized every ambush route..

good luck.

I'm still in the thinking process of what I wanna go with in my LFS is really good with wanting to buy and trade in large preds or stick with the cichlids and trade and restock to have a happy tank.

160 gallons is a lot of space to work with. If you don't enjoy lots of aggression, you can try the following

1) a group of yellow labs(6)
2) P. Acei(6)
3) Rusty (6)
4) Pick a red colored peacock, stock 1 male/3 females
5) Pick a blue colored peacock stock 1 male/3 females
6) a couple of mild haps of your choice could also work in this setup.

then add a school of Syn. Petricola catfish(6) and a couple of bristlenose.
