Help With My LargeMouth Bass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i feed them anything, the last batch i had i fed mostly Wardley floating cichlid pellets. as with all my fish, I try to feed a highly varied diet. My bass found cut raw chicken to be tasty. Earthworms are always a good choice. I also find the monkey-see-monkey-do to be effective. try keeping them with species that are easily trained or are already trained. my sunnys learned quick and the bass followed suit. if you want small ones and can legally collect, try spotlighting at night in late summer.

if you have never used spotlighting to collect, the principle is simple. At night the young come into the shallows to rest. Move slowly along the shore with a flashlight. This part takes a little practice in seeing the fish among the rocks. when you see a fish, just hold the light on him and slowly move a net to him. I always had more luck slowly bringing the net down in front of the fish and then quickly scooping everything in the path. It takes practice and develop your own technique. Ive used this method to stock my native tank with anything from sunnys and bass to perch and pickerel. Its a good way to get fish under 3"

wow, once again im grateful for the profound insight.

my last problem is that i had 5 lmbs, 1 died already. the remaining 4 are still alive. the 2 are not eating. the other is stuffing itself around 4 to 5 feeders in a single feeding. the last one just eats around 1 feeder.

what i noticed is that the one that feeds the most became a tank bully, he constantly bombards the other three and keeps on chasing and biting their tail.

is this the reason why the other won't eat anymore?

This could quite possibly be the cause. I have kept them numerous times and each time I had one out-grow the others and become the bully. They usually just chased the others around and kept the food to themselves. Mine usually ate enough to survive but had a very slow growth rate for it. if you remove the leader, the others should become more brave and come out and feed more. however, you will probably just have another bass step up and begin the bullying. I would suggest just adding more hides. I always liked using dense aquatic mosses but the more hides where the smaller bass can go, the more willing they will be to come out and brave the big boy.

what temp do you have the tank at, they need pretty cool water with higher oxygen then most hobby fish. All members of the bass/sunfish family are pretty much equal in terms of temperment to the meaner cichlids, a 100 for 4 largemouth at 6 inches seems pretty cramped to me since they generally have pretty large territories in the wild, those should be in more like a 150-180 to provde lots of space. altenatively you could add some dithers like sunfish.

Bottom line is that there's no way 5-4 LMB should be in a tank your size. How do you expect them all to survive? They're used to having such large territories and get stuck in an aquarium of course there will be some issues. IMO you should really think about your stock and make some responsible choices about it. It's just not fair to them if you think about it. You need an outdoor pond to be successful at that or a really big tank.
