My Oscar, Ollie has been hiding a lot lately and im worried about him. He only comes out for food and he hides when I approach the tank. He is housed 75 gallon tank with assorted cichlids including Demseys, firemouths, convicts, and one jewel. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you just got him, hes adjusting to the tank. If not, has he always been skidish?

Oscars minds are very confusing. The very first oscar I had did the same thing. They act dead, it is a natural defense they have when the are scared. They are also very lazy. How big is he?

As much as it sucks, that's just the way they are. Especially if they've been newly introduced to the tank. They go into a somewhat manic depressive stage and dont come out for a couple of wks. It's well worth the wait after they're comfortable, but that period is hard to deal with as their owner.

Are any other fish in the tank very aggressive to the oscar?
No, he is the boss of the tank. Every time he goes by a fish they get out of his way.

Oscars can seem quite sulky, but if you think the behavior is unusual check the water parameters.

Dempseys, firemouths, convicts, and a jewel....You dont research before you buy do you? Your oscar is absolutely freaked out by all the other HYPERactive little guys. Either remove a couple of the smaller fish or put your oscar in his own house...I speak from experience. I had my 2 oscars in a 125 gallon tank with 5 convicts. When the convicts would start milling around the oscars would BUG out. They just DO NOT do well with crazy fast fish...it really does upset them it would seem.

he is not new. I purchased him 3 months ago and he's 5in

In that case, it's probably his tankmates. The Jewel/Oscar combo isnt a real good mix. Jewels can get pretty nasty and it wouldnt take much for the Oscar to get upset or moody or skittish with the attitude of the Jewel Cichlid.
