Help with my silver aro please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks similar to what i had in my tank for 2.5 years, although mine was slower moving. My fish had both fin rot and hole in the head. It seemed like no matter what i did, i could not get rid of this fin rot. I tried large water changes, salt, meds, i even completely emptied the tank and bleached it 3 times, nothing seemed to work. I bought a UV filter and that seemed to "solve" the problem...

A few pics of my fish
after a couple weeks

After a couple months (yes its the same fish)

i have an uv lamp , i need to buy the bulb for it ,my salt water tank has one running for 5 years and never had a single sick fish

That is pretty awful. My new one has a little bit of a fin issue also, that appeared overnight. However it could have been a few things including some tank mates that have been since removed.

I have also used the Melafix and Salt and got the temp at 80* as well. It has not gotten completely better yet but not worse either.

I am going to do a water change when the Melafix is done (Per directions) in a couple days then try some Pimafix if it's still not better.

One of my black aros have had a major fin rot in the past.

Here's what I did to save him;

1. Isolate him to another tank.

2. Treat the fin and tail rot with Potassium Permanganate ( see below)

3. Salt and high tem (84 degrees)

4. 25% WC every day.

5. After 3-4 days, add Jungle Fungus Clear, I used 2 treatments. NO WC for 4 days in between treatment.

6. A week later, go back to daily WC at 25% rate.

7. After about 2 weeks, the fin and tail started to grow back again, I should see full recovery in 1 month.

Why potassium permanganate ? It kills and stop bacteria infection from the outside. Use it to prevent the condition from getting worse. Once everything is stabilize, then treat the fish from the inside (fungus clear)

Take about a pinch of potassium permanganate and mix it with 1/2 up of water.

Get about 2 gallon of tank water and put it on a separate bucket.

Take the fish out, place him on a wet towel. Have a friend to hold the fish down (don;t use dry towel, as the dry towel will get sticky and pull scales off the fish). I also use some stress coat and smear it over the wet towel.

Hold him steady and start applying the potassium permanganate using q-tip around the edges of the fin and tail. DO NOT GET ANY SOLUTIONS TO THE EYE OR GILLS AREA, THIS STUFF IS POISONOUS.

Let it sits for 30 seconds and place him inside the bucket with 2 gallon of water you took out of the tank earlier.

Let him swim around for 5 minutes and place him back in the hospital tank.

After 2-3 days, the fin and tail edges should be black and you shouldn't see anymore fin or tail rotting. Now treat him from the inside several days later and it should make a full recovery.

I was treating the fish with salt and tetracycline ,the last day of treatment the aro started acting really wierd got scared and did exactly what Koji told me .

Diff tank with clean water and salt

I can see the improvement now,

No more holes in the head and the fins are starting to heal

Thanks a lot guys for the help.

Ps Flamenco the fins and tail edges are black just like you said on your post

As for the water in the main tank , i have redone the whole thing wash everything new water, new cicle ETC

Man is so hot down here that i dont need to raise the temp ..Actual temp outside the house 92F, inside the tank 84-85F

You know I use to have that same exact problem (or still do). Perfect water...etc and my silver's fins would rot. Except in my case it would ONLY happen to the silver while the other tankmates were fine. It also wasn't just that silver specifically, I tried another silver and the same thing happened. I did babysit another silver and a jar in between and nothing happened to the jar, silver did start to rot a bit about 2 days after so I immediately removed it. I just don't get it. I may have to try that UV thing, please lmk what you do to fix the prob. I even replaced everything and cleaned the entire tank before my last silver / re-cycled. I just gave up having silvers until I get my bigger tank.
