They will totally change color as they grow so it wouldn't really matter which one you pick as it won't look the same later. A no brainer for me would be the one with more spots.

The pattern/spots themselves don't change much though right?

Color wise I'm not paying much attention to since I know with almost every fish the color doesn't stay the same

As the ray gets bigger the spots spread out and won't be as close together. One reason I don't believe in the big hype with rays that have lots of spots when they are small. When they grow up those spots really spread out and the only way to get a few more spots to pop out as they grow is if it's in the rays genes. Example:Thousand Island leopoldi's. If you want I can post a picture of a motoro pup I grew up to adult size and you can see the change as it grows older.

that would be fantastic if you could post pictures!

So from what you are saying, the one with less spots would seem to have even less spots when full grown due to the spread? I think that would be awesome as well cause everyone goes for the ones with a lot of spots but less but big spots is nice to me too.

This is no longer my ray but a forum member on here does own it now. This female had lots of spots close together when it was a pup and as it grew older they spread out a bit. Luckily it was in it's genes to pop out a few more spots as it grew older and turned out pretty nice. If this pup had fewer spots then it would be more noticeable of a difference when it got older. That's why I am always hesitant on buying pups as you never know how they will turn out. IMO the more spots the better.

the right one seems like it could be a blue disc though it will fade with age
