I don't have a pic because the fish jumped off the hook and made it back in the water. I know it is male. I know it is part warmouth because of the massive mouth. It had at least 5 or more electric blue rays across mouth and gill plate. It was very dark purple and almost black with white spots across the body.

Could be a green sunfish??? But then since the fish got away we cant be sure if it is a warmouth, a green or a hybrid green sunfish....sorry but we can't help you that much unless YOU actually caught one and take a pic of the actual fish, thats all I could for it right now.

Could be any combo of Sunfish (any type of green, or Redbreast Hybrids will have the blue radiating lines). Definately need pictures ......and if its a hybrid sometimes its near impossible to tell without DNA testing.

don't be so sure its a male and part warmouth. your description sounds pretty close to pure green sunfish. but no chance at knowing since you don't have any pics.

This warmouth looks like the fish I caught:http://www.tnfish.org/FishIdentificationID_TWRA/FullWebImages/WarmouthMaleTellicoNegus.jpg
When the mouth was stretched it was huge. The fish had dark purple over body, 1/4 of the lower body was black. Even though the fish was dark purple it looked black like this fish too. It had white striping where the pictured fish had green striping. I said white spots because the fish I caught was only 3 or 4 inches so the big striping was large enough yet. The electric blue rays across the mouth and gill plate look exactly like this fish but more intense: http://wrenchineer.com/images-sounds/texasroadtrip/sunfishcolorado2.jpg
Thanks for your help. Hopefully I can catch the fish again.

prob a warmouth

here is a very old pict of one

notice how the lines come off of the mouth

note: the fish was caught in a oxbow lake off the Tennsaw river, close to Mobile, AL in the mid 1960's
