Help with purchasing mammon cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been interested in purchasing mammon cichlids lately. I found a listing on eBay from extreme exotic fishes out Arizona that have a listing of king mammon cichlids for $25 each that are not colored up yet. My question is from all the reading I've done is that mammons and King Kong parrots are the best of the best by cherry picking out blood red parrot fry...the same as selectively culling flowerhorn fry as they grow out. So how would I know theses are actual king mammon fry and not plain old blood parrot pass offs with out waiting for them to grow out?

The information is here --but If I started this thread I would take from it that I couldn't be 100% sure what I was getting unless I received them direct from the Happy Farm. :)

Most people on this forum have never even seen fish of this quality in person.

I have. Tankful of them. Anyone been to Passion of the sea in the past can vouch for that..
They look like shlt compared to my fish shown. But huge and different structure and open mouth with certificate. lol. That's the truth. But really, each their own. And that's my opinion.

Guess their like flowerhorn, you don't know what your getting when purchasing a juvine. The only guarantee is to spend the money on a mature adult. I love the ones posted above and would be extremely happy to end up with one comparable. My LFS can order mature KKP for $59 ea, might go that route if they can supply me pics before I commit. Id want to see them before I waste money on What would turn out to be a blood parrot.

Well I didn't feel like playing the waiting game today and made a $7.88 purchase from Walmart. I have marlineland here, 2 walmarts, and petsmart who all carry parrots/blood parrots. I have been looking at all of them for the last couple weeks. The only ones that had them big enough that the fish are colored up is walmart ( I know walmart). I also read that king kong parrots are the best of the best of blood parrots and can close their mouths. Well the one I picked out was the brightest, deepest, orange compaired to all the others. The others had the normal squished mouth that stayed open and were a light faded orangish yellow . There was one other in the tank they had its mouth shut. My fish is about 3" at max. They all looked like they have hole in the head, unless parrots all have little dibits between their eyes. My plan was to get a female to breed with my syns and ZZ' and from what I read there really isn't a way to sex them other than venting. I did read that the females don't have the goofy looking parrot type heads so I picked this one since its head looked different than all the rest accept for its twin. Since this one has KKP traits it will be interesting to see if its a male and have a possibility of growing a KOK??? I realize its from walmart but think like some of the PKs that turned out. Well what do you think?

Heres a few pics in the tank. I read under the sticky parrot types thread about low quality fish with closed mouths. It dosent have as much as a notched head as most either. To me it looks like a lot of the KKP pics I found here and on the web. Ill take a knock off KKP over the regular PB.

The pics don't do it justice of how bright orange it is. Im already fattening it up on grand sumo red.
