I noticed slime shedding off of my RTC just now while I was feeding it and wondered what could of caused this. I changed my water twice this week 50% each time, scooping water from the surface because of the oil film on the surface and it seems to keep coming back. Water parameters are Nitrate 0, Nitrite 0, Ammonia either 0 or < 5.0, and Ph is 7.8-8.0. Can anybody tell me what causes the oil also because i know its not the food I feed it, I was thinking maybe its coming from the catfishes waste. Please let me know what could cause it to shed its slime like this and thanks in advance.

water changin' time ;)

i do believe stress induces mucus sheddings.
i changed my water on tuesday and friday and check the parameters today it seems fine. I started noticing a week back that his skin looked rough and thought it was nothing until i saw it swim earlier and slime coming off of it.

its normal. it sheds once in a while. if it sheds too often then somethings wrong
Thanks man, you dont know how relieved i am to hear that. My RTC is acting normal but its just when i saw that slime it had me paranoid, why do they shed slime anyways?

Depends... it can be because of growth spurts, poor water conditions (resulting in stress) as well as after the slime coat becomes contaminated with some sort of illness
Oh good to know, my rtc isnt showing any signs of stress though which is what has me confused. Maybe its the oil on the surface, but i failed twice trying to get it out the water this week i cleaned my canister filters also but it still came back, i even changed the carbon and have a bag of carbon on the sirface to try to obsorb the oil but still nothing.
