Help with sump plumbing noise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ Yeah, good point. There will always be some amount of noise because of the drip tray. No way around that unless you re-design the whole sump. One of the main reasons I hate the conventional wet/dry setup. But you should be able to get rid of a good amount of noise by running a Herbie.

The noise was mainly coming from the bulkhead over the drip pan. I solved that with the filter material. The rest of the noise is coming from the durso pipe hole at the top (very little) and some bubble splashing noise in the drain hose. I'll switch out my durso with 1 1/4" instead of 1" and see how that goes.

So I can't do a Herbie setup without the drain pipes going directly into the sump water? Oh well, I'll go with a different sump and a bigger one sometime in the future. Thanks everyone!

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

maybe some foam over your over flow drain hole? i had a siphon overflow in my old 60 gal and i stuck an air hose down the tube and tied the other end to something else so it wouldnt get sucked it and that helped alot with the noise.

Update. I changed out the 1" durso to 1 1/4". That helped with the flow a lot. Now I don't have to reduce the flow by half. I have the pump running at full speed. Noise was a little better too.

good job, your overflow flow rate should always exceed your pump's flow rate.

Cool,glad its got better.

Correction, you can. Many people do... you just need to put a gate valve in where the main herbie line enters the sump. Back it off a bit until you find the sweet spot where the hose fills with water but doesn't raise the water in the overflow. Easy.
