i just bought a fluval fx5 for my 150 gallon oscar tank. i dont really understand the types of filtration to put in the three layers that are in the canster. can anyone help me out with what to buy? i have 1inch bio balls in the top center right now but what else, i have no idea what to use. the fish are about 7 inches each and i have 4 of them. i still have to buy the sponges that go around each layer but i dont know what to put in the center. thanks in advance.

I just bought a new FX5 fr. Ebay today. You mentioned abt. 2 bxs of prefilters and 6 bxs of biomax media. My questions are, do I still need the polish pad for my new FX5? How much less of the flow rate will I get if I added the polish pad?

I currently having an issue w/ my new 125g where I am seeing a lot wastes floating on the top surface of the sand substrate. Where is the best location for me to set up the intake and the multi-directional twin output nozle to create and circulate the water flows, so it can remove as much waste as possible?

How far from the sand substrate surface should I place an intake without worrying about the sand get sucks into an intake of the filter?

I am current running on a Proclear Aquatic 125 w/d filter, 2 Jebo 838 canister filters. I am planning to retire one of the Jebo 838 canister filters when I set up my new FX5 filter this week.

Thank you in advance for any feedback and advise.

2 boxes of pre filter

and 6 boxes of biomax

1 basket pre filter, other 2 biomax

That's what I used in mine. I just bought like mine like two to three weeks ago love the FX5:headbang2:headbang2mine is house in 125gal ca/sa

I heard that the polish pads clog very quickly so I didn't get any. I have two FX5s running, one I filled with a bunch of random bio stuff I had left over and just bought two more boxes of biomax. The other I filled 100% (including the mechanical ring on the edge) with pot scrubbies. I probably need to rinse my foam from the first one at some point soon, but so far I still get great flow and crystal clear water with this setup. And the scrubbies were way cheaper than actual media.

As for how to aim the returns, that's something I haven't quite figured out in my sand tanks just yet. But in the back room with the FX5s I just tinkered with their aim til I felt like I was getting a good mix of surface agitation and circulation. I don't use any powerheads and there are only a couple dead spots in the entire tank. I managed to find an angle where the flow goes up at about 30 degrees to the surface but sort of curls underneath and down to the gravel, where the water then moves front to back.

(I just wish I could figure out a good way to get the same effect in my taller 110 hex with an overflow. Way too much accumulation down at the sand in this tank.)

thats how i have mine setup.

top basket is all pre filter.
middle is all bio max
bottom is biomax with ONE tiny thin layer of polishing pad on the very bottom.

if u use polishing pads on a tank that produces a decent amount of waste, i reccomend changing/washing it out every week, 2 weeks at the most.

just get what i said. lol. the other stuff is good but not as good as bio max. if u having a problem with unclear water then maybe u should get the pad. other wise not worth it.
