Also, since they are gonna be in the buckets. Once we get the tank all set up, how do we acclimate them? Do we put them in bags in the water, or just dump them in? My cousin has had these fish for 5 years, but doesnt have the best advice.

Bag them or hang the bucket inside the tank for 30-45 mins.
Use the drip method to acclimatize them.
I like to use a turkey baster to add in tank water every 10 mins.

Are they going to be the same tank they were living in?

Oh yeah make sure to keep the filter media wet & close to the norm temp, so that the BB survive the move.
Once home try to get a filter & heater on the tubs(airstone if needed), since it's going to take a while for the new take to get up to temps.
It usually takes me 1-2 hrs for my new tanks to get up to the right temp.

Thanks so much for all the help! Im going to have my hubby read this. He is the one with experience with fish. Im still learning!

Horde- they will be going back into the same tank.

Im not sure what types of fish they are. I think he said one was a german cichild of somekind. I will have to ask the hubby..

thanks again!

All the BB is not in the tank water, it is in the gravel and filters. It wouldn't hurt but it is not a necessity to keep all the tank water.

^^^
Yup most is found in the filter media & substrate has some nice bb too.
The only reason for keeping part of the water is cause it's up to temp.
That's the only reason I keep some, it makes waiting for the tank to heat up a lil shorter. :D

Moving 55G's of water is way too much work IMO! LOL

The reason for keeping as much of the "old" water as possible is usually for prevent a shock from a drastic change in water chemistry (pH, etc...) from one location/keeper to the next.

That's why I mentioned the Drip method.
As long as you don't rush it, it's fine.
I have pretty hardy fish so an hour is usually good for me.
Some fish are more sensitive & require more time to acclimatize.

Lugging around 55G of water, a 55G tank & fish is not the most desirable thing to do. :D
