So I got home from school and my livingstoni was dead, but I did notice he hadn't been eating for awhile. Now my small Comp has not been eating since I got the 3 large Comps. Her stomach is looking a little larger could this be like something my fish are getting and dying from or could she just have eggs in her belly? Or be both? How can I figure out whats going on and try to get her to start eating?

Would I be safe to treat my whole 55g tank with clout? It seems like when one fish dies from this another picks it up. Could it be something in my tank, and how could I get rid of it? I would really like to just treat the whole tank and hope the clout gets rid of this permanetly because I dont feel like treating this over and over again.

Yah that is what I do. Just buy a ~$13 bottle of 100 and that will be more than enough to treat the 55.

I would suggest you take out anything you don't want to have a blue hue to it, ie big rocks, plants. It really is the best med for bloat, but it is also harsher on the fish, but it works. I have used twice on my 135, and then a few times in 10 gallon q-tanks.

But yes with bloat 1 fish will show signs and likely that may mean that other fish have it too, just not showing signs yet.

ok, so does that mean if I take out my driftwood, rocks, and fake plants the parasite or w/e it is will not be on these?

So bloat is an odd thing... But the short answer is that it doesn't matter, ie the fish will always have it in them but stress causes there immune system to not be able to handle it.

For better info I am ripping this off the clout treatment a few posts down, posted by Fish Phenom:

"Malawi Bloat is believed to be caused by a flagellate (a unicellular animal, a protozoan). This flagellate occurs in the intestines of all Malawi cichlids but normally causes no harm since the fish's immune system can cope with it. However, in a stressful situation such a balance may disappear and the fish may lose its resistance against an outbreak of a flagellate "attack". This often leads to bloat."

Fish are very good at fighting off disease, but when exposed to stressful conditions over a lengthy periods of time their immune systems weaken, thereby exposing them to the possibility of contracting various diseases. Under "stress" the organism multiplies causing considerable localised damage. Once severe enough, the intestinal lining is penetrated and the organism enters the blood causing systemic and organ infections. In large numbers they can block the intestinal tract of a fish creating the"bloat"effect.

Some stressors:

1. Low oxygen (O2) levels
2. High nitrite (NO2) levels
3. High nitrate (NO3) levels
4. High ammonia levels (NH3)
5. High or low temperature levels
6. Water pH
7. Lighting
8. Rough handling fish
9. Overcrowding
10. Not enough shelter
11. Harassment
12. Excessive salt
13. Improper diet (specifically herbivores)

What one should remember, is that the parasitical outbreak is brought upon by any number of stressors (some listed above), many times in conjunction with one another. Therefore, sometimes the best way to treat a disease is to prevent it from ever happening. A clean non-stressful environment will breed colorful, thriving cichlids.

Ok so I treated and the next day after the treatment was finished one of my small comp died. So then I go to feed them and one of the larger comp didn't even touch the food. It is showing the same signs all the others did. Today I put it in a 20 gallon and I am just going to treat her alone.

I was just checking her out real close in my 20g and I can see clear stringy things coming from the bottom of her mouth and top of her. Parasites? :screwy:

clear stringy from the mouth... Hm and this stuff has to be fast acting, but clear you say.

So I am out of my league, you might try posting here and seeing, but clout is the strongest med I know. Did you mean you only treated for 1 day? or for the full week. (I really think clout kills a ton of things, look at its bottle to see.) If it is bacteria I say try maracyn 1 and 2, and maybe some coper safe for the possibility of it being a parasite. But I really don't think you should use those if there is clout in the water.

(IE you just hit the fish with your biggest weapon out there since it works for bloat, but I don't know so I really wish you good luck and I am sorry I can't help more.)
