HELP!

Just like what they said that should take care of. Loaches def. dont handle it well but if you can get it quick enough you might be good. I had alot of problems with ich when I had loaches they catch it from being to stressed. Alot of scaless fish have the same problem, not all but alot. yah make sure it says aquarium salt becuase there is a difference. Other then that what they have told you is the best way to go , I dont reccommend using any other liquid treatments from lfs b/c alot of them dont handel well if you have scaless fish or invertabrates esp. The blue med, you have to cut dosages in half and it doesnt work well with them.

The only fish I have had problems with at 2 tsp/gallon were corys and mormydids. I have never had to treat a pictus but have treated other pims at that level. I use the 1 tbsp/5 gallon level as a maintainance level, not for treatment.

ok that makes sense. since you use 1 tbsp/5 gallons on a regular basis I can see why you would need to increast to 2 tsp/gallon for treatment purposes. however, those who don't use any salt at all on a regular basis would probably be better off, imo, starting off by trying 1 tbsp/5 gallons and see how that works. if after a week there is no improvement then the amount could be increased more but imo going from no salt to 2 tsp/gallon would be an awefully big jump for scaleless fish.

just my 2 cents :)

hows it goin you pull outta it. loaches are always more suseptible as they are smooth skinned

Well I got the tank up to about 85 degrees and I got the salt in yesterday and so far it seems as though its going OK. The only fish that I can see spots on are the loaches and they seem to be a little less than yesterday. The Red Hooks and Pictus Cats are showing no spots.

Keeping my fingers crossed!!

1 tbsp/5gallons is less than 1ppt concentration and while it works as a slimecoat enhancer and antifungal prophylactic it won't stop an ich infection unless the strain is unuasally salt sensitive. Because of the speed that ich can kill loaches I don't think the cautious approach is the safer one.

well we each have our opinions and individual results and methods will always vary. I have gotten rid of ich with 1 tbsp./5 gallons on loaches and other fish, but that's my experience. hopefully whatever amount that Walls has added will do the trick.

on a side note, there are many people who feel freshwater aquarium salt serves no purpose whatsoever and that you'd see the same results with the same temp increase without salt as you would with temp increase with salt. I don't necessarily agree with that though...just saying there are those who adamently feel that way. :)

Agreed, some studies have shown that most strains of ich stop reproducing around 86 degrees but there are an increasing # of strains that are surviving at higher temps including one out of china that survives at 91 F. There are also now strains that are fairly salt resistant but combining heat and salt seems to get them all.

Learning a lot here. ;)

Well things looked better yesterday than today. The Loaches seem to have more spots again and now the Red Hooks are getting "crazy". I dont see any spots on them but they are skittish as all hell. Also one of the Pictus Cats seems to be just SLIGHTLY irritated.

Still keeping my fingers crossed!

This is normal, the last batch probably just hatched and the mobile stage is latching on causing more "spots" (very visible on loaches) as they hook on it irritates the fish. You should start seeing a reduction in the number of spots tommorrow or the next day. The main thing is that the new ones cannot reproduce so as they die off they will not make more.
