Ok, so for the substrate, I have an extra bag of smooth playground sand sitting around that I had left over from my uromastyx tank, I was wondering if I washed this really well, could I use this for my tank? Ive seen other people use sand for their substrate, but I figured Id ask just because of the buymblebee's undersides. From what the guy at the store told me about the brand, the grains are more circular instead of geometric and rigid.

Thanks

Play sand is washed in bleach, dyes, and hard metals.Do not put it in your tank

Is aragonite-based sand better? I know alot of people on a saltwater forum I am on use aragonite-based sand as a substrate and they have used it successfully for years..straight from home depot. Just washed it. And I now that saltwater fish are extremely sensitive. Any brands that would be considerably good?

After reading up some more, I read that SILICA sands are okay as that is what the aquarium glass is made of, siliCATE sands are bad as that is what algae feeds on and a vinegar test can clear this up for you. a teaspoon of the sand in queston and a cup of water is what youll need. put the sand in the water. Shake the cup for 3-5 mins and let sit for about an hour. If the sand dissolves, it is silica-based and okay to use. If not, it is silicate and should not be used in the aquarium. Any thoughts?
