Ok I have about a 4 inch JD and a 3 inch Oscar.. they were doing fine yesterday and now the Oscar is swimming towards the JD and they are biting each other in the mouth.. should i separate them or is this just a territorial thing that will pass?

Hi, how big is the tank they are in? Cichlids can require area to base their territory and defend it against others. Too small a tank and the O could feel the whole tank is its territory.

It sounds like a territorial thing. It probably won't pass, but will most likely get worse the larger they get! How long have they actually been in the same tank together? Sometimes a "pecking order" will be established, and the aggression will mostly subside. However, you'll be looking at an upgrade anyway, to even attempt to keep these guys together, so maybe it's time to start looking at doing that now.

they have only been together for one day.. i have a 140 gallon that i should be getting soon.. they are only there for a temporary placement.. i may just leave the JD in the 55 and move the O but for now i put a divider down the middle of the tank

if there are no injuries I'd let them stay together some time, hopefully one establishes dominance but ends up accepting the other..

I think they are fine in the 55 for now. A lit kissing doesn't hurt. Just make sure one didn't lay eggs. My GT had eggs and she became a monster even though there wasn't a fish in there that could breed with her.

I will try that out.. they have been at it all day.. i dont think either of the two laid eggs.. but i will look again.. thanks for the help!
