I work at petco and was told by corp. that selling bettas as fighting fish is illegal just by labeling fighting in the ad what do you think?

Could very well be true depending on local laws. But on the other hand i've allways seen betta's labeled betta's not fighting fish...

Same here but I have heard them being referred to as fighting fish though. It's hard for me to imagine someone being thrown in jail for fighting bettas.

It might just be a corporate directive, and not an actual law. Since this is 2010 and nothing is anyone's own fault anymore, I can see why they would want to avoid calling them fighting fish. The first time someone bought a bunch of them and made them fight, Petco would get all the blame just for labelling them fighting fish.

As a newbie fish keeper and a dumb *** I think that I can answer your question. I have heard them refered to in years past as "Siamese Fighting Fish". I always thought it cruel that these beautiful fish were kept in container that is too small to hold my pee on a good drunk!

I figured that with the reputation of being "fighters" that they would more then handle themselves in a larger community tank, be the "boss(s)" and love the room and company. They are NOT FIGHTERS outside of there own species by any stretch of the imagination!

Why would you call a fish that gets its arse handed to it by a rosie red minnow (No sh1+) a FIGHTING FISH?

Ha ha.Sig material right there.

So for once Petco/big business actually got something right...

Weren't bettas originally called siamese fighting fish? What's next? Are we going to have to find a new name for red devils?
