I came home today and found half of my cichlids in my tank to be dead. I have one Ornate that is trying to hang on and swim around. I have an FX5 for filtration as well as a HOB Aquaclear 110. I took the Aquaclear off of the tank last night because it had started to leak. I have done a 50% water change and added stress coat and it has seemed to help my cichilids however I think that the ornate has bloat... He is upside down and breathing fairly well. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of the bloat? I have heard of trying to release the built up gas by using a needle on the swim bladder. Anything else?

Thanks!

Ive aspirated goldfish with a hypodermic. If hes upside down its his swim bladder, which can be tricky. if hes at the top right side up with his back sticking out of the water it is probably in his gut and should look obvious. With aspirating the swim bladder you have to be more carefull and more species specific to make sure youre poking the right spot. Easier with the gut. If it comes to this then let me know. Ive done it quite a bit since my friends are too squeamish to do it themselves.

I dont like to aspirate a fish unless other things have failed. He might recover or often antibiotics cure the source of the problem but this sounds like it might be something else going on. If you fix the problem and he is among the survivors try antibiotics and then if that doesnt work then it might be time to aspirate.

I had to deal with that aswell but it wasnt as bad and it went away with very little treatment

Good Luck!

Glad everything turned out well. My lionhead is perpetually having this problem. Its not water conditions or diet as all my other fish in the same tank have never had it. Maybe one of our experts can enlighten us. I think with the special goldfish they are somewhat genetically predisposed to it.
