Hey guys i need help, I just bought a ruby red splio piranha and had trouble with acclimation it tore through the bag and went right into the water with barley any acclimation. It is swimming and floating around in the tank but its breathing seems labored. Every time it breahtes it opens its mouth and its body bumps a little. Is it normal for this to happen with such a short acclimation and can it recover. Any help is appreciated.~Dave

it's hard to say, what are the parameters of the water in your tank?

U still got the water from the bag? try to pour whatever tts left into a pail and shift the guy in. then start your acclimation

sorry been really busy, he seems to be doing fine now except not eating and being kind of skittish. When could i expect him to start eating i have offered shrimp, smelt, and tilapia but he has not gone for any of it yet. He also seems to be really skittish going to hide and darting around the tank when lights go on or when I approach it. I know there suppost to be super aggresive piranhas but since acclimation he has not exhibited any sign of aggresion what so ever. Any Ideas on when he may stop being quite as skittish as he is. Any help is appreciated~Dave

eh, i've heard 100 people say they're aggressive and i've heard 101 people say there isn't and never was aggressive. theyr'e all different. they all take a different amount of time to become comfortable in their surrounding. some never do. it's only been 5 days. it could be weeks, months, years.

the bigger problem you have is the fact that your fish isn't eating. do you know what it was eating before you got it?

Piranha are super tuff. They live through drought even with soaring tempratures where they come from on a regular basis. It will bounce back. A good way to get it eating is by offering live food at first. Once it gets used to you he will be taking smelt from your fingertips. Good luck Monsta!

I don't know what it was eating when before I bought it, I got it off a guy on craigslist who was moving across country, he had told me about the fish but didn't mention what to feed it. Supposedly it had been pretty agressive, killing an oscar he attempted to keep as a tankmate so there is hope once it warms up to its new home. Should i try blood worms or live feeders (as much as i dislike to) to entice feeding or just keep trying with what i have tried so far.
