One of my laps lost an eye about 6 years ago. She's the largest of the 4 and the best feeder. I haven't been able to get a pic, but she's pretty cool. The eye socket is covered over in skin now, completely patterned like the rest of her head.

Ghost knife for sure-notorius eye pluckers...So are Poly's as I know my Senagal grapped my HUGE albino oscars eye when it was little...
And "put it down', are you kidding?! Your fish will live a long while without an eye, it'll have a huge blind spot, but thats not a big health issue, right? You might want to rethink your fish's accommodations, but your poly will be fine.
