It could be an issue of dissolved oxygen, especially if you are on well water. If you changed a lot of water you could be dropping the DO, as it is often deficient in well water (and sometimes city water). Our well water at work comes out of the ground low in oxygen (about 2ppm) and supersaturated in other gasses (such as N2). This water would kill our fish outright, either from suffocation or air embolism, so we have to run it through a degassing tower. To put it in perspective, our emergency oxygen for the fish tanks turns on at 6.5ppm. Judging by the fact that you only use canister filters with no aerator, it is likely that they were unable to equilibrate these gas levels in the tank quickly. Saturation levels of gasses are higher in cold temperatures, but as the water heats up it holds less gasses and the risk to your fish is higher.
