Help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally, and this is just my opinion, I wouldn't put a 5" Cichlid in a standard 40, a 40 breeder yes, a standard 40 I don't think is wide enough... But that's just my opinion. :)
he'll be ok, it still fits the formula either way....width of the tank is twice the length of the fish, length of the tank is 4X the length of the fish. Plenty of room and then some for a solo FM

It's never too early to start thinking about stock. His stocking choices could influence how he sets up the tank. What if he says "ok I want gravel" then puts gravel. Then afterwards thinks "I want Cory cats". Gonna wish he got some stocking advice before setting up the tank.

Look into South American dwarf cichlids. Don't get your hopes too high on most species though. you'll most easily find Rams.
Or African shell dwellers. There is a lot of cool species there too.

Welcome to MFK :) Even though seller said aquarium was almost new leak test aquarium by filling it with water on level ground, or on a stand made for it. Secondly be patient do research on fish species that can live in a 40gal for life, there was some good suggestions but you may decide to go with something else so search the links that was provided by the member about cycling, etc. Btw if you need any help with identifying a fish , or its care please post pic and member 's with knowledge of that fish will chime in with their knowledge :) please never make impulsive purchases, I personally did that years ago and it led to failure.

Maybe so, I just like to spoil my fish where possible with as much room as I can give them, and I assume other keepers do the same - I know this might not be so, but please, let me be naive with this one. :D

I guess I'm doing my 1" acara a big favor by putting it in the 210.

I just use the formula we were always taught for lizards, turtles and crocs....."the width of the tank should be 2x the length of the fish and the length of the tank should be 4x of the fish". Snakes are definitely a different story, but to me fish would fall under that - mind you, this is just a minimum size to reference, you're always free to go bigger and is much preferred

Angelphish Angelphish Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt FishTanksOfCO FishTanksOfCO Thank you all for the amazing insight! Angelphish Angelphish , I had full intentions of buying the necessary accessories and cycling the tank I just didn't mention, which I should of. I have been watching a lot of Youtube about cycling in preparation. In regards to the direction I would like to go in, I want something that is stimulating to the eye and not too boring. After several trips to the local tropical fish store, I have made a few decisions of fish I would NOT want. Nothing of the saltwater variety, due to my inexperience; Freshwater angelfish, because I don't really like how they just float at the top, all dead looking and such. There were oscars and cichlids in the store and they were very pretty but I don't know if they could fit in the tank. Also eels looked very cool, but again I'm not sure if I can fit what I have. Another option, is a fish with some sort of chompers, I have always wanted a fish with some wicked looking teeth but I have never looked into something like that because I I always assumed something like that would be very hard to take care of, a fish like that would be the most ideal, but if I can't properly house it I totally understand and I'm willing to substitute, and then save the money to invest in a much larger tank for something along the lines of the latter. Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt , the dimensions of my tank are 36 inch length, about 18 inch depth, and 16 inches of height, the sticker that is stuck to the outside says it's a breeder. Sorry I probably should have stated this in my first post

Oscars get a bit to big for a 40g, and I have no experience with eels, but if you like cichlids why not go the route Stephen mentioned with firemouths? If its a 40b and they only get to the size he said (I've never kept them myself) they should live happily in there. As for fish with nice chompers, I have no ideas that will work in a 40g.. Probably best getting to know the hobby first, working out how much maitnance you're willing to do (and if you're willing to let your fingers be a snack!) and what not before diving head first into a large tank with a large bioload and large fish with large teeth. The larger everything is, the harder it will be to find new homes for it if you decide that you can't handle a large setup.. If that all makes sense? :)

Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt OK I figured that about the fish with chompers, so I get it. I will definitely be looking into the cichlids that were mentioned. Especially the firemouth, some of them look sweet!

Your not being naive, Firemouths can reach 7 inches and more.A small group if firemouths ir any other small c/a cichlid would need a 55 bare minimum.
