I just got a pike cichlid and was told he would be 8" but I think he is a Venezualian strigata and is going to be 20" Help! My camera pooped out so I don't have a pic. What is the most common pike sold?

Really need a pic to tell what you have. The most common is prob c. sveni.

Need pic or at least a good description, ie color, patterning and size for a more precise answer or everyone will just be stabbing in the dark.

Ok he is about 4" long is a gren/cream base color with a long black stripe that starts at his nose and goes to an spot on his tail. The stripe is lined with a gold/white on both sides. His fins are edged in red on his back. The tail fin has a black border with a red diagonal stripe that forms a v like this >. He has a diagonal black stripe under his eye and has no spot on his shoulder yet but has a few spots in a circle where it would be. He has spots on his head and a dashed line that starts at the should spot and extends about 3/4 of the way to his tail. I hope he is not a venezualian strigata becuase he will need a bigger tank.... I am thinking he is maybe a juvenile proteus, lepidota, multispinosa, strigata, or anthurus however he likes the bottom of the tank so far... I just got him yesterday. Any help would be appreciated. If you think he is a strigata how big do they normally get? I saw about 14" for most of the sites. I am planning on getting a 75 gallon or a 125 gallon if he is. He also is getting bullied by my 3" severum....:screwy:

Does he look similar to this, If so probably Johanna, 12-14" long.
First pic is bout month and half older and appx 4" long. Second He is
appx 5.5".

If he truly is a Venezuela/Strigata (True Strigatas are not that common) then you would need minimum of 125, really larger than that since it gets up to 20 inches. You want at least that wide so it doesnt have problems turning around.
The problem with Lugubris is that when they are that young most all
of them carry a very similar striping pattern like that.

I took him back and got a Xingu I orange cutie pie who is very fiesty. :) I plan on eventually getting him a 75 if he gets bigger then 11 inches. I hope the severum doesn't beat him up. If he does I am going to give him to my LFS.
