While feeding the fish in my 55gal tank I felt a slight electrical shock. I unplugged one of the lights i thought was malfunctioning but it was still there. I looked at all the electrical wires but none are frayed or worn. Could it be my heater malfunctioning? The fish seem to be uneffected, there is a green terror 2 parrots and 3 baby pbass too small for the larger tank they would get mistaken for feeders.

First, you should always use a grounding probe. I used to think it was salt water only but I have seen a good deal of voltage in fresh water as well.

Second it's either your heater or a rio pump if you have one....

Using a voltage tester or volt meter set to read AC voltage (VAC) put one lead on a known ground (Round ground opening in outlet) and the other in the tank water. Then you just unplug one device at a time until the voltage is no longer detected by the meter.

Don't take me wrong, but could it be low PH? Sometimes, when th ePH is very low and you have small cuts/wounds in your fingers, the sensation is exactly like a small electric shock... happens often with me and my acid tanks...

Voltage leakage can occur inductively. That is why you should use a ground probe. I have a hob filter that leaks voltage quite often...so I should have already taken my own advice :nilly: As you have already observed, it does not affect the fish (the people who want to sell you the ground will not agree (money does that)). The fish are not grounded but you are, so you feel it. Normal leakage is very small. The ground will be most bennificial for your comfort.

:iagree:

And the whole time I actually thought that being neutrally buoyant, dwn about 4 atmospheres & suckin on some compressed air was most beneficial to my comfort. :headshake D*%n it all, really thought I had that "all" figured out. I'm gonna have to go & rethink this now, probly gonna take awhile too. :screwy: Geee, thanks CHOMPERS!!!:lol2:
