In marine the suggestions were to keep the water clean and to lower available phosphates. Basically the same advice for any algae. There is a marine treatment that kills cyano with a small dose of erythromycin. (with marine it is 250mg/55gal) Patrick Donston and Julian Sprung both said they hated that 'treatment' as it is a quick but inefficient fix and they would rather see the person improve the overall water conditions to beat back the cyano. They said they largely saw people overfeeding tanks and not protein skimming and doing adequate water changes.

For blue green slime algae (cyanobacteria) increase plant growth via co2, or liquid carbon. Very easy to get rid of 'algae'.

Not all algae outbreaks are cured by lowering phosphates. Several types of algae's are actually fixed by an increase in co2, or liquid carbons.
