The comment about being used to crap water might be correct, if the pH was badly off and the new water was not it could cause pH shock.

That's what I was thinking

:iagree:
He probably had OTS and his fish were like the crazy hobos you see on the street -- filthy and loving it. Well, maybe not loving it but certainly conditioned to it. Clean water can be as detrimental to fish who are used to crappy perameters as ammonia filled water can be to fish living in a healthy environment - like yours :) Fish living with OTS need to be eased in to better conditions and although you were obviously trying to do the right thing, it ended up backfiring. Just curious, did you test the water before you did the WC? I'm wondering what the pre-WC perams were....
Messing with your friends tanks is like cutting your friends hair drunk -- it's very tempting but ...just don't do it.

how in the hell do you own fish and not have a kit is what i want to know , or even the quick dip tests , something at least . o well know for next time .

If he loved them so much, why weren't they in brackish or salt water?

without knowing the water params before and after you can only guess. My guess would be that the water change caused a rapid PH shift, if you test the KH (carbonate hardness) and it is below 50ppm there is a good chance this was the problem.

Always a good idea to test water params before and after a water change.

Howdy,

I can see both side: You wanting to help and him being upset about the loss of fish which was a direct result of your actions. Since it was not him asking you for help but you persuading him, I believe you owe your buddy some fish ...

Reasons for fish death have already been discussed above. It just happens. I had water conditioner go bad once, in combination with a high chlorination peak, it killed fish & plants. Bad Karma.

yeah really you'll never know, but I'm guessing these fish are replacable. Take him to a good lfs, settle it with buying him some cool new fish and show him something online saying he should change the water more often and leave it at that.

any chance this was a sand substrate?
you could have stirred up anaerobic area/pocket. that'll release "what i heard it is) nitrogen, and that will kill the fish. being that he did a WC every 3 months would give it plenty of time to build up to dangerous levels

Aren'nt MONOS brackish....Maybe the drastic, well slight, water change tossed their sensors off the chart...Not your fault....You simply are training your buddy to be a responsible keeper....
