I've been wanting one of these for years and know little about them other than they get big, eat anything, and are very aggressive. I would like to invest into one but would be nice if anyone knew more about keeping one of these predators. How fast do they grow, max size in aquarium hobby, any tank mates (if any), and minimum tank size? Do any of you have one of these cat fish?

All i know is they are very very aggressive hence the "black devil" nickname. No tankmates, you would just be wasting money. You could probably keep one for life in a 180 as they arent very active. Not sure on max size, most likely 2' min.

Well thats Bette than nothing lol! I thought I seen somebody feeding one in a tank with rtc and snc but it was a marbled cat. I really want one! That white dangle on the tail got me hooked as well as they are jet black in color. Cat for me haha. Tigrinis cats also have the white whip on the tail too correct?

I just got myself a 2" ARTC... so far he haunts his piece of driftwood and leave the rest of my community tank alone ( I'm sure this will change as he gets bigger, his tank is currently cycling) He hasn't grown much since I got him last week ( my hybrid and the rtc I had even our tsn showed noticeable growth the first week) He eats like a pig though.... live blackworms ( a staple in this tank for the banjo cats/fire eel) And I have noticed no active predation of the tetras( I'm sure once his mouth is large enough if they get near his hole they are toast) I have personally seen one in the 24"+ range ( imo closer to 30") that was commed with other large predetory fish. I will give this guy a shot in my pool once hes to big to eat yet not so big he'd easily "rule" it and make sure there are plenty of hiding spots ( The one I saw commed for monthes on end had his own hide spot and the tank-mates appeared to have a very healthy respect for it)

But I've read enough experiances on here to do this on a weekend i'm going to be home to keep close watch. The joys of large predatory fish...

I've seen pics and everything but when you see one face to face, they are awesome. Web. Saw one in person he was with other hardy boney fish like gar and with other bolder fish like other large cats.

The genus of Hemibagrus has been heavily revised this year by Dr. Heok Hee Ng (aka Silurus on Planet Catfish) with the addition of ~18 new members. The revision article leaves my layman head spinning.

ARTC was used a bit sloppy for all three formerly-known species - wyckii, wyckoides, and nemurus. Really, only wyckoides has the red tail. The other two - not at all. The problem roots, it appears, in their utter similarity when young but sub-adults and adults look quite different. The red in ARTC tail does not appear to come in before it hits at least 6".

My hope these links can get you started on the research you need to accomplish:
