I have to 2 Odoe (african pikes) heading my way early next week. They should be 5-6", so I'm planning on acclimating them in a 40 breeder I've set-up. Filtration is an ac110; bubble wand; pool sand substrate; temp between 80-82 (I think... my thermometers suck). Mainly I want to make sure they know me, and are not fully reliant on live foods. Once they get a bit bigger, they're going in the 180 with my Aro.

I plan to try to ween them with stuffed silversides. I plan on working raw shrimp and tilapia into their diet as well. Out of curiosity, are there any other food to keep in mind? Do they eat insects? I used to keep crickets around for my aro.

Also just looking for any other input on these guys. I've farmed as much info as I can, so I'm looking for anyone who's kept/keeps these guys. How should the tank be decorated? They don't seem like the hiding type of fish.

Thank for any input!

Odoes tend to be bullies. How big is the aro? An odoe has the equipment to really make it's hissy fits count. Just bringing it up as a watch point, these fish have been cohabbed plenty of times without problems. Not sure if it would take insects. I don't see why it wouldn't as they take pellets.

These are cool fish that don't get enough credit. Post pics when you get em. I wanna see teeth! :D

True. I've never seen a carnivore that didn't like FD krill. FD krill was actually what broke my GATF.

i had an odoe for about a year... awesome fish, but he didnt like my ATF's, would chase, and injure since the pike's teeth are not to be taken lightly... he also used to beat the crap out of my 13 inch Nile perch, and he was only 8 inches himself, so just be careful... Mine would eat just about anything, and whenever he fed from the surface he would splash about a gallon of water out of the tank every time... very fast swimmers and aggressive eaters... if mysterious wounds appear on your other fish, the pike is most likely the culprit

how big is the max size of these fish? Did you sell it?

yeah i sold him, had to separate him into a 40 gallon breeder away from my ATF's and it just wasnt right to keep him in that small of a tank... i think they get 18-24 inches in the wild, but i've never heard of any getting that large in the aquarium

Hah! There will definitely be pics posted. My Silver has got to be pushing 14" right now. He is NOT an aggressive fish at the moment, but I am hoping he will get nice and mean, or at least more confident, as he grows.

Freeze dried krill.

Thanks! Good to know. I keep those around as well. Wonder if they have a positive impact on the Odoe's coloring.

Damn. This is worrisome. Hopefully the large tank, and relatively small size of the fish will allow them to cohabitate without much fighting. I'll watch my Aro closely when I eventually move them in together.

The fact that I've ordered two isn't a huge problem is it?

- Thanks again for the input everyone!

Hopefully, because of that, they'll be too busy fighting each other to mess with anyone else.

I have 2 myself one 13" and is a bully....had it with yellow tail cudas and vampire tetras and chased them all the time till i had to move it to a tank . went it with some rays that are much larger and was almost scared he might get ate by one of the rays...well to my surprise he bit one of the my rays..the leopoldi...so cant stand for that so he went in a tank by himself ..recently got the second..7-8" and within minutes it even chased that around..calmed for a few day till the other day and it bit the 7" one around the gill area behind the head survived and eating still ..they bout eat worms and tilipia chunks... so some are agressive to tank mates and seems as i have a *****y one...also i do think the large one i have is a female possibly as the smaller one fins are much more reddish than the large one...and a head shape that is not sloped like the other
