ok i was going to get a hepsetus odoe for my 125, but i saw they were shoalers so i thought i have the filtration i could do 4 if i wanted, but as i read up on them i found that people think that they need a 300gallon
i just dont understand why a fish that only gets to 14" needs such massive accomodations? i understand they are skittish but you can keep a 40" arowana in a 8x3 but not a 14" odoe in a 6x1.5

Arows can turn on a dime they live at the head and the body follows.

Hepsetus Odoe can't bend like that they need room to turn around and they swim fast as hell, and dart at their food.

This is true minimum tank size for a full grown Odoe should be at least 300.

i just dont see how a 14" fish cant live in a 6x1.5

You never really see a 14" odoe anyways. There's a thread on here now about big ones and the biggest is like 10-11". He's right though. It's b/c the way they dart around and stuff. They need a long tank to swim in.

It prob could live in there, but you might stunt the growth, esp. if you want a 14", give it as much room as possible.
There is also the possibility of it spazzing out.

The more i see them though, I would love to pick one up, I don't blame you if you were frustrated about needing more room if you don't have it right now.

One would be just fine in a 125. A small shoal might be pushing it, but it could work.

i thought it would be ok it is in a relatively sedate location, and i find once you get fish acclimated well that they tend to calm down
i was just reading the thread about the guy who wanted to put 3 in his 180 and got flamed and i was surprised! also i figure if i can fit one the only issue of a shoal is bioload correct?

honestly, i think 4 would be fine in a 125, just not optimal. It's not going to kill them and if you are a good keeper, they will be happy. i had 5 in a temp tank at 8" that was only 4ft long x 2ft deep x 3ft high. And they were happy, coming up to the tank for food when I was near. The 1.5 depth is the only issue i think but as said above, it's not going to kill them. give them a bit, not too much flow to make up for it.

i could add a small powerhead, and the filtration will be 1x fx5 2x marineland 350 and possibly a sump if i ever get round to it
