U had bio in the tank?? I never heard of that. But hey it looks like it works. I'm only going to have one fx5 and on one side if the tank have a powerhead and a circulation pump. Is that good r no??;)

For the ceramic rings, as long as there is water movement through and around it, it worked. I also had media in all six trays of my fx5's.

As for your setup, I would place the inlet in one of the corner overflow box an the outlet close to the other overflow box. I would also keep the heater in the inlet overflow box just to hide it.

I don't know why you closed off the overflows??? You could have easily plumbed the FX5 through them. It would have made for a cleaner set up. "OR" My first choice would be to use the 40 you have as a sump and plumb the overflows to filter socks with bio media and heaters in the sump with a submersibable pump returning the water. You could still use the FX5 but wouldn't need it.
Of course it doesn't matter what you do as long as your water is clear and your paramaters are zero.
I really like a UV light, a in tank unit from Petco or Petsmart would work great.

Are ceramic rings doing anything? I think Biomax or other porous media would be better. Fish and water look great! I understand the idea of bare bottom and trying to add bio media to replicate the lack of bottom substrate. But straight up ceramic rings aren't very porous, I don't think they were doing much in your application.
But again as long as your water parameters are zero, it's all good.

I was "seeding" the media for the other four fx5's of the 220gal tank. It helped in the seeding process, so I was happy about it.

Well its all on money, what we did was put a thick.peace if glass to seal it so if I ever want to use it I can. Now that I think about it I should of done that, how expensive is plumbing, we rent so I would have wanted it done right so there wouldn't be 180 gallons of water on the ground and kill.my bass. So I might just do that, I have a feeling that my parents are going to be made, and also how is this layout for a sump

Plumbing is cheap, its the bio media and return pump that adds to the cost. For the price of a loaded FX5 you should be able to build a more than adequate sump filter.

Not knocking your set up. Looks like you did a fine job.
all credit goes to majorhavok for the idea. i based mine off of his but added some stuff. thats how i wanted mine to be but i made my own and with is how it is 180 sump set up.png
. the tank is a 40 gallon. i added carbon becasue my mom hates the smell so ya, ok, i have a plumber that live kinda close so ill ask him one of theses days, but as for the return pump i can get a 130 watt pump that has 1340 gph and can shoot water 13 ft for $45, and also same with bio media i can get a 1 liter bottle for 10$ so i can get some stuff for cheap. so ill talk to my parents and the plumber about it and see what he says. thanks for talking me into it. its just easyier to clean and a little less maintenancewith the sump and the fx5. so it will take me a little long the expected to get this done but i want it done right :headbang2
