nice tank! Do you find that the gar has difficulty navigating wth all the hanging plants? My gar doesn't seem to appreciate heavy planting or thick surface plants.

I've seen them going trough the thickest roots. But yes, when they want to be out in the open, they seem to avoid all obstacles and since they are not the most flexible fish, they have trouble turning around. This video was taken only a day after I moved them to this tank, and I thought they will get used to their new surroundings given time, but so far there is no improvement. I intend to move out some of the floating plants in a couple of months, but they are great nitrate absorbers and I'll keep them for now.

you could try building a "corral" of sorts for the water lettuce using fishing line and suction cups. This would keep it in maybe one half of the tank and give the gar more swimming room. The bichirs would probably appreciate the open surface area as well though they are definitely more flexible in this regard.

That is a nice tank! It kinda reminds me of a jungle, with all the Water Lettuce roots hanging down.

Nice setup!

filio... so im assuming that the hanging plants are water lettuce. what the lighting setup? also im assuming they dont need co2 since the leaves are out of the water. also any thoughts on how easy they are to grow.

im thinking about getting some. i think the hanging roots from the surface is an awesome look. plus i hear it with help my pike cichlids feel safer and they will come out from there caves more.

The tank is 600liters(160gal), 180cm (6ft) long. This is a fire eel. I uploaded a video of her own here. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=278424

Most of the roots are water lettuce. There is also some water hyacinth and salvinia in there. The lettuce is fairly easy to grow. As long as you have sufficient light it will grow and multiply. You know it is considered a pest in some regions. I use 6 36W tubes for light. You will need at least 10cm between your lights(lid) and the water surface. Water lettuce can grow really big, but I only keep young plants and bin the old ones. If you don't want the roots, but only look to darken your tank, salvinia is a better choice. The water hyacinth is not really an aquarium plant, so I won't talk about it.
