Herichthys deppi sexing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One has really started to get a much steeper profile on its head. The other 2 have kept a very sloped forehead and profile. Possible male and female? I'm not noticing much difference between the markings though. Going I'm to give them a little more time and separate them into thier own 55g to see if I can get anything going

Hope you get a breeding pair. It's hard to tell the sex until these fish grow more. I have noticed the black blotch comes and goes on the one I have that I think might be a male.
IMO a 55g should be fine with no tank mates. I am planning something similar. I also want to keep a divider handy.
How is the aggression?

The one I think is the male is in a 150g community with a male HRP, female aureus, female GT, 2 male rotkeil and a male terquoise severum. He's the smallest out of all of them but he holds his own just fine. Him and the female GT are the only 2 that spar from time to time. The other is in a 37 tall and is with 3 Cory cats and 8 black and white skirt tetras. She nips the tetras fins a but hasn't killed any... yet. I figured I'd start with a divided tank and see how they interact with each other. The way thier 2 tanks are set up now they can see each other and they don't flare at each other or anything now. The "female" has dug a corner closest to the 150 though

Sounds like you have the same sized tanks as I do. The one I think is female is larger, about 6".
Took some pics tonight. The mouth shape looks different.

Had these 2 together for close to a week now. The one with the steeper profile is really starting to loook more male than the other one. Almost looks like he's got the start of a little nachul the way his head is forming. So far a little chasing but no serious damage to either fish. Sorry for the poor quality pics but these guys are constantly on the move. Going to let them grow together for a few months in the community setup and give them a chance to bond in there before introducing them to a setup where it's just them and some dithers. Will probably throw some HRP in the mix as well.
