herichthys labridens dilemma...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
None of the Herichthys (labridens complex) I've kept have every tolerated a tank less than 6 ft, even in those tanks, I had to eep a divider at the ready.
Even the smallest, bartoni needed a 6 ft tank, for the pair.

After mine spawned 3 times, I handed the paiir of to a fellow aquarist in my local club,. He put themmm in a 55, and the female was dead the next day.
Same with H tamosopensus, my pair took over a 125 gal at maturity, killing all others in the group of 6.

They did raise a number of fry though, back in 2012, and were commonplace in the Chicago/Milwaukee area.

I used to go at least twice a year to the GCCA extravaganza cichlid weekends in Chicago, and was always able to find some of the most rare new world cichlids their.
Of course there were always the throng's of Africans to get thru, but......one of the last times there, I found Paraneetroplus bulleri, among others.

I got the ones from Dan the day they went up. Except I only got 3, they slowly hit about 2", smallest one got killed, I sold the smaller remaining one so it wouldn't get killed, then the remaining one randomly died. This seems to be a trend with Nosferatu with the exception of bartoni to my knowledge... Usually. Friend of mine got a big group of pame, a big male came out on top of the group and slowly picked all the others off. Certain species are not made for the "cram as many species as possible" fishrooms.

Allegedly the media luna population no longer exists in the wild. There is a population in the Rio verde though, which I feel would either be worse or better in aquariums, as they're detritivores as opposed to molluscivores, but rheophilic species/populations also have a reputation for fighting eachother when they don't have to fight thousands of gallons of water.

If I ever get the money and space I'll fill the niche of supplying central american cichlids... But not for the sake of making sales, I'll breed for my own personal purposes, and sell if people ask me to. Having little populations to "collect" from would be pretty cool.

You may want to check the gcca.net want adds.
There is a cichlid breeder couple called, pleco pete, and cory cathy that specialize in central American (and other) cichlids, and may show up at Chicago swap meets.
The last time I checked they had H bartoni, and some other hard to fibd Central Americans.

Maybe pete had them before i think i know of a guy that might have them in Chicago i know he had some big old ones…

Would love it if you could find out for me! I know Dave’s has some bartonis. But I am really on the hunt for yellow labridens

I will see if I can find anything about that. I have never been to Chicago but getting my dream fish might be a good excuse

I’m in the Chicago suburbs and sadly the swaps have gotten smaller each year. I remember when they would take up multiple banquet rooms but sadly it’s typically just one now. With that said duanes duanes mentioned I’ve got some amazing fish over the years. Speaking of Herichthys that’s where I got a dozen of turquoise sp. My largest male pasted away recently.

Bartoni I'll admit isn't that hard to find anymore. Dave from Dave's rare fish has them up for sale year round.
