bartoni are very aggressive for a Herichthys. I've had bartoni that just wouldn't live with other cichlids. Besides the aggression their care is the same as other Herichthys. I've had some that got up to about 7". Good luck with them.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to get a pair and keep them in a divided 40g breeder or 55g depending upon how big they get. So aggression shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the sharing. It's good to get some info with someone with first hand experience with them.

Awesome collection! I too love the Herichthys group. I've kept the White Labridens "Tamul" which I found to be very aggressive and I'm working with a beautiful group of Blue Labs now. I have 2 males and 3 females waiting for a pair to form.

Thanks. All the fish in the photos are no longer in my tanks.
H. bartoni is a very nice species to work with. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the ones I used to keep.
The group of Herichthys labridens yellow I used to keep were very drab in color. They were F1 from Rusty Wessel. I tried to color them up by offering them a good diet and even tried using turtle bulbs to replicate natural sunlight. The photos I've seen of wild labridens look very nice though. Maybe they just lose their color as the generations increase. Does anyone have any F# labridens yellow that are very colorful?
The F1's Eddie is pond rasing in Fllorida are very yellow even when small, we collected them in 2006. Ken

I've seen bartoni in Media Luna at least 10", very aggressive fish in the Aquarium. Mine wittled themselves down to one male. Ken

Ken, thanks for the info. I wonder if their color is related to being pond raised?

GMfishnut, very nice photos. Thanks for sharing them. I've kept the blue labs before but didn't have luck spawning them due to a very aggressive male. Hopefully you can get some more "blue labridens" into the hobby.

Thanks Ken. There's not much info on these guys. Now you and Bobp have me paranoid that I'm going to go home from work to one bartoni. I'll keep a close eye on them and split them all up at the first sign of aggression. I've never really had any luck keeping any of the herichthys in non divided tanks anyway. I just want one M/F from the group, hopefully I can get that. Sounds like I might need a divided 75g for the pair if I get a pair.

Thanks for the info guys!

Look at it this way. If you end up with one bartoni, it will be an excuse to put in another order of cichlids from Jeff and add a few more species to your tanks.

Lol, I don't need and excuse to order more fish. Unfortunately the tanks are about full. So I'll have to control my purchasing :grinno:.

BobP,
With the extensive collection you used to have, you wouldn't by chance of had any steindachneri?
