Nice save Ryan! This hobby keeps you on your toes, just when you think you've got it all down, you're fish find a new way to kill themselves!

BTW, juvies look great. The more fish I grow out, the more I come to appreciate the sight of a big fat belly on a juvie.

I've had these guys for almost two years now. I still have seven adults in my 210 and they are constantly beating the crap out of each other and the large adult severums they're with.

They recently went into spawning mode again and I have a wild pair sitting on wrigglers. You'll see the female's tail is growing back after being half chewed off. They are brutal little fish. You'd think seven 4 - 6" fish in a 6' tank wouldn't be a problem, but that's not been the case.

At any rate, they are still one of my favorite little fish -- ferocious, beautiful, and unique.

Next month will be three years since I got these guys. Time flies. I am down to one pair of them now. They are alone in a 210 with a male Krobia guianensis and basically refuse to let me put anything else in the tank. They were beating up severums twice their size.

I'm not sure how much longer the female will hold out (you can see she's looking a little rough around the edges) so I wanted to make one last video of them. The male is trying his best to convince her to spawn but she's only partially feeling it. Then he gets frustrated and starts bullying her. They lay eggs maybe 3 or 4 times a year now but the plecos usually get the eggs before they hatch.

I know it’s 6 years later but any chance for an update if you still have them or to see how it ended?

I lost my last pair in 2015 when I imported some wild Heros severus and they spread a nasty bacterial infection to all my tanks.

I spread around a bunch of F1 fry but no one seems to have kept any for breeding. Karen Haas has an old pair from Wayne Leibel and she got eggs a couple days ago. I’m hoping she’s able to successfully raise a batch and bring the fish back into the hobby.

UPDATE— 2024 MAY!

I'm aware this thread is ancient old, but I have just snagged a trio of these from a local pet store that had them specially ordered in for me!

I'm excited. I've been keeping severums for several years and will also be getting a trio of mouth brooding severums (they're absolutely beautiful in color and pattern if you havent seen them).

Anyways— my fry cant be more than a month or so old (maybe?) but I will regularly update their progress here is anyone is still following and if anyone is interested ♡ 20240522_174038.jpg
