Heros notatus gone wild! Who wants some fry?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most of our tank raised severums that you get at the stores are crosses. My green severum has lots of spots but not the same as the notatus. When they first started importing these fish they were getting whatever they could andet them breed not knowing some of these fish were differant fish. So our green severums are mostly mutts unless you know where they came from.

My little notatus from wetspot was a F1 and at 2" had some spots.

Next week the fry will be 2 months old. I don't see any spots yet, but they are still putting on decent size and showing some lacing pattern in the fins. They are eating machines. Here's a video of them devouring beefheart cubes. Check out the fat little bellies!

Looking good!

I'm running out of fry food. They are begging all day long :(

The fry are 2 months old now and ranging between 1" and 1.5". I think it's time to start finding homes for them. If anyone is interested and you're comfortable taking fish this size, please drop me a PM. I can ship.

I would recommend growing them out in a separate tank for a while until they put on some more size. They're probably still a bit too small to go into a community tank, especially with other cichlids.

They are eating everything you throw at them -- micro-pellets, small pellets, frozen bloodworms, algae wafers, beefheart... hell, they even chewed all the green algae off my tank glass.

I wish i had the room and the money, i REALLY want a notatus. How much are you asking? shipping priority?

I can breathe a little easier now -- I started seeing spots on the gills and chests of the juvies tonight. I was afraid my notatus pair had spit out duds. :D

I got F1 notatus from Jeff Rapps in September '09 and they were very similar in appearance to these. They basically look like green severums do as juvies. Now those fish are about 4 - 5" and they have very dark green, almost black, bodies with rusty-colored chests and gills and black spots. These should progress similarly.

I may have to keep a couple for myself. ;)

Dang!! They are growing fast...I must need to do more water changes every day...lol They look really good so far.:headbang2

My baby severums are gaining shape and some body color.

This will probably be my last update with this batch of notatus. There is another batch quickly growing behind them. I will be shipping these guys starting next week.

This batch of fish is approximately 11 weeks old and they've started developing spots. I tried not to shrink the pictures too much so that you could see the spots coming in. These fish are healthy, happy, and eating everything. They are starting to constantly chase and fight with one another so it's time to find new homes for them all.

The food you see them devouring in the video is beefheart.

Thanks for all the comments and replies to this thread, and for following along with my first notatus spawn!
