It's been a while since I've had my notatus spawn. These are the wild-caught fish that I received from Peter (peathenster) a year or so ago (maybe 2?). I have moved them all around from tank to tank and finally I put the pair back together in my community 150. I haven't been pulling the fry because I have no room to raise them out. It's still fun to watch them protect the fry, though. I love that they turn jet black except for the red fins. You can see the parents signaling to the fry and chasing away tankmates in this video.

Sorry for the dirty tank -- I quit doing w/c and wipe-downs the day they laid the eggs. The fry went free-swimming yesterday.

Very cool, I love how that one Geo was so interested XD

They look awesome in breeding color! Are you going to siphon the fry out?

I've got nowhere to put them. :( I'm considering a small kiddie pool for my garage. A local cichlid breeder raises all his fry outside in kiddie pools with just floating plants and a few powerheads. He says they grow faster in the round vats/pools than in rectangular tanks. But for now every tank in my house is packed. I have a 150 in the garage and ran out of money before I could get the pumps and wet/dry filter.

Buy a cheap 40 breeder and a sponge filter. You probably have a spare air pump and a heater laying around? Anyway, congrats on the fry.

I like to start wigglers/fry in a 15g or so...much easier to concentrate food to them...

I keep a 2'x2'x1' tank with a bunch of net breeders in it for growing out fry. So much easier to siphon / change water than a tank with a bunch of fry floating around...

I'd wait until the 1" mark or so before growing them out in a pond.

Ran out of money for the 180g? DIY is your friend :)

There is nothing more stunning than watching a pair of cichlids gaurd their fry. Nice video and the fish look stunning. They seem like they are good parents too.

The notatus pair have been incredibly good parents. After three days they still have a huge swarm of fry. Most of my wild-caught fish do well with fry in community setups. The same cannot be said for some of my tank-bred ones...
