heros notatus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would love to get some of these but around here anything apart from gold, green and red spotted are like rocking horse s%&t.
That`s why when i saw notatus in the shop i bought eight. All that is happening now is they`re in a big tank with some others (in sig) waiting to see if any pair then i`ll seperate them and hope for nice coloured spawn.

Might be a real noob q but what does the `sp` stand for? I`ve wondered for a long time now..

Anyway i`d run down there and buy as many as i could house... :)

sp stands for 'species'

i think it's mostly used when someone discovers some fish that looks new but they don't know whether it's an new species or if its some variant of something else.

i think a lot of times it will be used to this effect e.g. cichlasoma nigrofasciatum sp. 'Rio mongo' for example. this fish may be some convict cichlid variant from rio mongo, but it's not 100% sure.

that is my understanding at least... i could be very wrong
i'll be looking to pick up that pair soon!

Arrr So i was right in my head... Species variation....
The real Heros Severus is a mouthbrooder but the 2 other severums sold under the severus name arn`t.. Ie. green severum and gold severum. All the other heros species have their own type ie. notatus, rotkeil and efasciatus.

Nice link ewok ... between those pics and Taz's, I think I am liking those sev's more so even than the rot's ...

And you are right ... ie I have some Crenicichla sp. 'wallacii' from the Rio Atabapo. In other words, looks exactly like Crenicichla wallacii but no one is quite sure if it's an extension of the previously known range, or a new closely related species. Sometimes you'll see it as 'sp. affin' as well, latin obviously enough for 'has affinity with species' then the name.

hehe i got two just now :D
i'll post pictures later when they are settled in. i think the female has a fluke on her eye or something... nothing that some prazi pro can't fix!

I actually lucked up on my 3. they didn't look anything like now. 1st time I thought they were dull greens or even bad golds. 2nd time 2 showed the red eyes, dead give away. guess the last one was picked on because I went back again and it was finally showing.

They have great color even when not breeding. Main difference is the anal fin gets bright orange when breeding. If I ever get the tanks setup I'll def breed them. the pike (Atabapo "Fire") doesn't like them much and ate the eggs the 3 times they've tried. Also the pr hates the 3rd leg so hopefully yours are more peaceful to any extras.

Rapps has some F1 for $12.50, maybe you can ask a shop to get them in as he also has some wild Inirida @ $10.

An atabapo tank was a thought of mine by the I couldn't include my pike unless I got a bigger tank. I was thinking of adding some of the atabapo acaras too but 1st they'd need to grow basically full size before I'd trust them with the pike.
