HEROTILAPIA MULTISPINOSA?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think they're great go ahead and get one.

Excellent choice! I have a breeding that are fantastic. They are very peaceful and easy to keep in a community tank. If you are want to keep them by themselves I would suggest adding a group of small schooling fish with them, like Tetras, Danios, Mollies, ect. I have a mixed school of tetras with mine. They also don't get larger than 6" so they are easy to house.

Like most cichlids once they get adjusted to their space they will become very personable, and come right up to greet you and of course beg for food. They are absolutely gorgeous fish, the picture you posted look just like my male minus some scars and a nuchal hump.

Sorry I am rambling on, I would just have say that I think they are fun cichlid to keep and I think it would be a great idea for you get to some.

im pretty sure asking the internet if you should buy fish is always going to result in people telling you to get them haha i say get it they look awesome

That's not true, if he said I have a 55 gal tank and wanted to get a Dovii I'm pretty sure I wouldn't say go for it.

jewels on the other hand are small look great and pretty easy to keep. Thedarkone's discription of an idea set up was perfect. I kept mine with mollies in an extreamly aged 29 gal tank with alot of algea and floating duckweed, jewels love to pick at that stuff allday long. Now that I think back on it, it was a very nice tank, I shoud another one.

Is there a variety that is more orange than another, or does it just depend on the quality of the individual? I see these at LFS all the time and they're more of a rusty orange color, but occasionally here on MFK I see really neon orange ones. I'd consider a few if I could find them in that color.

What's the aggression and size like for these guys? I have mostly South Americans here, severums and such. Would it be alright to mix them?

is $32 a reasonable price though?

Depends. If you think its worth that much then go for it. 2 years ago I would have paid that much for one as there werent any to be found here. But now everyone in my club has them and you cant give them away. All in the eye of the beholder. You like it and can afford it then....yes.

Also check with Ken (fishfarm). Im sure he's got a breeding pair he would sell you and for much cheaper than 32 bucks ea.
