Is there a variety that is more orange than another, or does it just depend on the quality of the individual? I see these at LFS all the time and they're more of a rusty orange color, but occasionally here on MFK I see really neon orange ones. I'd consider a few if I could find them in that color.

What's the aggression and size like for these guys? I have mostly South Americans here, severums and such. Would it be alright to mix them?

yes they vary between orange and bright yellow. the male i had a few years back was bright yellow, he looked like his colour was painted on.
the one i had was a bit lively but im sure there are calm ones and im sure much worse as with any cichlid, depends on the individual. general info seems to be around firemouth level.
they should mix fine with sevs, i would do it depending on my sevs and only you know how your sevs are with other cichlids. however should a sev want to battle then the herotilapia would have no chance.

My sevs are all bark and no bite. I may try a few and see how they go. If they don't turn out very nice or I have compatibility issues, I can always find a new home for them.

Also, stuckinthemiddle, I think synoguy is in England, which may make getting a pair from Ken problematic. ;)

answer every question over the phone and the guy knows his stuff. seems to prefer to speak the latin name of the fish rather than common name. will go and check the tanks if he isnt sure of stock and wont just stick you with a no because he is too lazy. very polite.
quality stock ive had off them in the past.
you dont have to order on tropical fish finder, you can ring in your list.

is $32 a reasonable price though?

It's hard to say with you being on the other side of the pond if $32 is reasonable or not. I got mine for $15 and they are considerably hard to find in my area. It all depends on how common they are to the area. If they are harder for you to find they may end up costing a little more.

They are pretty non aggressive peaceful fish much like sevs. I think that the two species would work great together, I would still add a school of smaller fish as the herotilapia multispinosa do much better and feel more comfortable with them present.

As far as size a large male will grow to 6"

Hey Ryan, in my experience with them ... I'd rate them above a keyhole but below a blue acara or port cichlid in terms of aggression. Probably closer to the keyhole side of the scale than in the middle to boot.

$32 thats about £20 a piece. that shops having a laugh, thats a rip off. you can find them online for about £5 and any good lfs can order them in for you for about the same.

$32 is very expensive for one rainbow. One of my local stores stocked full-grown adults for $4 each.

There do seem to be two different color morphs. The ones I saw were a faded yellow color, not the brilliant orange that is also available.
