Okay. Well, I will be turning 15 in a week or two and am really interested in getting a job for my local herp store. I feel I am as educated as most of their staff. I really enjoy talking to some of the guys there, but I don't think any of them know me by name or anything though. But anyways.

I have taken a class in school on how to get a job and keep it. But all that stupid class taught me was stuff for big corporate positions. Should I approach Zach & John (Store Owners) and just flat out ask them if they need any help over the summer? Should I just call up the store and see if they are accepting applications? Or what? This would be my very first job I will be getting a real pay check out of.

I Put this in the exotics section because some of the people in here know that I use my mind in this field. Since I am wanting to go to college for Zoology, Herpetology and gen. Bio, i think this would be great. And maybe the job maybe able to turn into something a little more thatn just my summer job.

But I am just asking for some help.....

im 15 now
and ive asked alotta shops besides pets mart and petco
summer is theyre slow season is from what they told me
i realllllllyyy wana work at a shop too
but i dont think they want younger kids

  1. Ill think about it when Im not so tired but I will leave you with this for now.One of the best things somebody younger can develope for the workworld and life in general is the ability to mentaly put yourself into other ppls shoes.Step out of your mind and your routine and think what its like to be the person you are facing, having their problems, thinking of their age and what theyve been through. How they got their and what keeps them their. Why they act how they do.What they want and need to make life go smoother for them. This is good to have in all relationships weather it be freinds, boss, family customers especialy if you want repeats and so on.Everyone acts the way they do based on what they surrounded themselves with all their life.
  2. On the other thing and more to what your after here, lol. No employer wants to bring somebody into the already existing crew if they think in any way you might have problems with another member.Keep hard core personal stuff and opinions to your self for a bit.Let them know you have good morals and love the animals, are willing to realize that most of the job will be cleaning cages and feeding, maybe even janitor stuff but thats ok.You dont want them to think you will tell a customer to f off if they keep a herp poorly but you will do what it takes to keep the customer and find a suitable way to advise them on their f up.lol.
  3. Remember this forever>dont be late, dont be a know it all, dont get caught up in gossip,be a good listener,if you get pissed and want to quit or you slack off and it shows, for the rest of your life whoever they know and who they know and so on will hear about you and you never know who you may be asking for a job from next.Dont burn bridges.
  4. tell them they can try you out for a week first and no hard feelings if they cant fit you in.Dont act like a tweeker but do a good job and remember who the boss is.Dont feel bad if they dont need you right away,if you did good they wont forget you.Just remember that fitting in with the others as far as getting along is one of the things they look at the most.Good luck bro. This is just off the top of my tired head, lal.Does lal mean laugh a little?lal,,,,,,,,dude a crix just crawled across my foot and scared the crap out of me.Thats th first one that got out in like 6 months.thought it was a nasty pincer bug or something.:nilly:

I dont realy know what to tell you but Im 13 and I just started working at a donut shop!
(its Tim Hortons for all of us canadians!):nilly::headbang2:nilly:
oh yea I forgot to say, I like using little icons!!!:headbang2:nilly::nilly:lol jkjk:nilly::nilly::headbang2:screwy::headbang2:barf:

You will have to look at private stores as the corporate stores require you to be 18. Just ask if they are looking for part-time help, or accepting applications its as simple as that.

I have not the slightest idea what JL's massive list was for. But all you really need to worry about is looking presentable and having good communication. Don't brag, and keep it positive. The only thing you don't want to do is put the store down or act like you are more knowledgeable than the current employees (even if you are).

I was just giving him some advice that reached even beyond a small herp shop and from my own expereince running a crew or the fact that almost all my daily contacts are buisness owners, principals, docs and lawyers.I get to hear all the good and bad straight from the source.I personaly think your coment about my massive list was crap considering this guy is someone though on the net,I care about.I also know he was and is smart enough to know what Im talking about so if you can, give your own opinion and dont bash someone elses if it showed no harm whatsoever.

Your list is very helpful. I think after I am sure I will have a car to use I will be approaching the manager. I am prepared to do all the dirty work and would be very happy to do anything that they ask of me. Clean out cages, mop the floor, clean the bathroom:naughty:lol. I am ready for it. I will take the money that they offer. I am not going to ask about the money until they for sure want me.

how far is it from your house?Just remember others might be poping in on them too.Might want to give them a heads up.If you already talk with them then it should be easy to let them know.
