I'm just going to go ahead and say it.........

If you don't already know what you're picking up, don't pick it up........

Should be self explanatory, but I wish you luck at the Hospital........You're going to need it......

damn... now ur making me scared to go.

Dont let him scare you, get a few good field guides for that area and don't grab anything until you are sure of what it is. You will be fine.

and like I said, double check with a field guide and you will be fine

It should be scary.........Exactly how much Venomous experience do you have? Add to the fact how long it will take you to get medical attention, Venom treatment is still quite rudimentary. Think about that for a little while......

I am saying that he should not mess with any venomous that he finds and to get a good field guide so that he can understand which snakes are safe for him to catch. If he does this then there is nothing to worry about. Furthermore, Costa Rica is not exactly a 3rd world nation, they have fully functional hospitals and could readily treat a bite (especially one from a native snake since the Hots from that area are not terribly potent and there are very few deaths a year from bites of these snakes in this country).

The bottom line is to be sure not to grab a hot snake and you will be fine. You don't need any experience with venomous to know how to read a field guide.

YOu are going to have a great time, been there twice, seen numerous dendrobates species, iguanas, ect. When you go you should make it a point to go fishing in Lake Arenal, at the base of Volcan Arenal, catch some nice big Dovii in there. :) Have fun!
