I am so excited for this spring/summer. A small creek by my house offers a lot of variety for me to examine. Also the River a good 2 mile walk from here.

But, I am getting supplies ready for next week(Spring Break, and its been warm this week so it will be a good herping week).

Supplies Im working on:
Golf Putter (end grinded down to a nice cylindrical L)
Leather Gloves
Dip Net
Sane Net(for lizards)
Large Plastic Bottles/Jars
Field Guide (Im studying it right now so i should know it like the back of my hand pretty soon!!)

What supplies would you recommend for herping(homemade/cheap)?

Oh yes, I am Most Often A Catch and Release guy, unless I find something ive been looking for....

a noose

that is right and good luck most of what i get here is garters and i see them once every 2 years:(

You arent that dedicated then. I got into field herping last summer and realized our local variety of wildlife...

during this time of year i get to contend with bears cougars and wolfs with my feet for my only mode of transport but i do get lots of salamanders and the 5 different sub spiecies of garters and one year way back i could of swore i saw a swift and i have not found an alligator lizard at all and dont get me started on the frogs and turts

Oh man,
I could go on and on with stories from last year.... Mistaking a water mocassin for something else when i reached for it.... Yea, that was the stupidest thing i have ever done.....

scary i also have to wait for later in the year if i dont want what i think to be slender salamanders

I think I might try really going out and herping this year.........Never really done it to a full extent but I think I might do it this year...........

More often then not when I go herping out here I run into western diamondback after western diamondback so I sort of quit, a large rattlesnake will scare the piss out of you coiled up in a defensive position and taking a bite just isn't worth me finding a California King or somth'n of the like.

Plenty of lizards out here, though. I used to catch desert iguana's for fun, but they're too fast for me at my old age.
