Hey curious though, is she colorful for a female? This is my first JD so I don't really know.

you really wont tell till she goes black in a couple of months. she will really turn dark if you get her a male. they will both then turn clack and show their breeding stripes

I thought males were the ones with less blue on the cheeks ? So I'd think male.

males have dots on the cheek but not low on the gill plate like her is my male and you can tell he has nothing going on low on the gill plate

Ok I see. Don't they usually go dark though because of the substrate you put down in the tank though? I didn't though they did it because of mating. Ya Im a noob to JD's here.......... Always used to have only Oscars.........
