I think it's too much of a pain at this point, the gravel I have in now is completely bacteria laden and good for a fishy tank. I really want to do sand but it is also incredibly hard to change substrates with a full tank.

really not hard to change, but it's a risk because most bacteria is in your gravel. unless your filter has been running for long time and have enough filteration to back it up.

Also piranha are hardy fish, you can still change subtrates.

Just picked them up, pics to follow shortly after I get my electric blue hap out of hiding :( any ideas on how to get him out of a piece of fake driftwood?

Nevermind got him out haha, They are so small... like Nickels. I'll get pic's up once they are settled in a little... one is missing an eye and one is missing a bit of his fin... Doh :(

When should I first feed them?

:edit: I got six instead of three. I paid less and got more.. plan on upgrading the tank anyways.

Feed them ASAP, whenever they will take food, feed them, that way they wont nip or kill the other nickel sized piranhas.. They will almost feed anytime, just feed in small portions. Hope to see pics soon!

lol i got one with one eye smaller then the other but i didnt wanna get one with out an eye cuz i didnt want him to be at a terrible disadvantage POST PIXXXX

as requested, more to follow... they don't like to sit still at all, I was amazed to get 4 in one shot.

I'm thinking about starting a grow out thread with weekly updates, it might be nice for people who are thinking about getting P's, I'd update foods, water params and pictures of growth any input on that idea?

Sounds good, good luck on them and keeping them alive!! Feed them well!

Awesome pics!

nice pacu

They aren't pacu's haha, I've never seen Pacu's tear the tail off one of their tank mates or take an eye out of another.

...I dont know why he said that, but lol, the one on the far right kinda looks like a pacu, but of course its not...
