i went to a local fish store today to figure out what i might ot into the 120 thats just sitting there now since my ally committed suicide. well i was looking around and saw some other monster fish and i came across a tank with a tropical marbled gar sticker on it, but no gar in the tank. i think there was a huejta in it or something with a pleco. well abotu ten tanks over they had an alligator gar label. i looked in and they had this foot long gar in the tank. im almost 100 percent that this is an ally because of the snout thickness, and the coloration it had. im am wandering if this is the tropical marbled gar from ten tanks over that got moved and mislabeled. if it is the tropical marbled gar, what info can you share. obviously im gonna look it up but if you want to add anything that would be dandy. like size, temps, growth rate.......

that is a Florida/spotted gar..

anyway to tell for sure which one it is? from going through the forums it seems to resemble more of a florida in pattern then the spotteds......... or is florida spotted gar whats its called. how are they different?

It's pretty hard to tell the differance.. They grow to about 24" in the 1st year..so ur gonna need a big tank.. They max out at 4'..

gars in general will grow pretty quickly from 1-2" to 10"...usually in just a matter of a couple months. from this point onward, their growth rates slow down a bit and differ from species to species.

spotted/Florida gars, on the other hand, generally stay around 14" in their first year, give or take a few inches.

and also, spotted gars do not hit 4' in captivity. they average at 2' in home aquariums.
