I found out i have the hunting/fishing channel. I've seen it a few times, sort of cool seeing the professional hunters at work. But just now i was surprised. They showed a guy shooting a huge bull elephant in the forehead, and then another one, and then said he had shot over 300! I thought it was illegal to hunt elephants. Not a lot of information about this online...wanted some clarification on the rules about hunting big game/endangered animals. Are elephants making enough of a come back to be hunted by trophy hunters?

they are special game "preserves" or something like that. a hunt can cost upwards of 100k and 90% of that goes to whatever contry it is in. I hunt for meat and to protect the Animal's I love from overpopulation and disease. So to me this is pointless.

100k?!?! So that man has spent $30,000,000 hunting elephants? wow...

Well no, not all are that much, but some are. I t really just depends on how much luxury you want.

Agreed. I find it pointless to hunt animals of this nature. Just like hunting
bear (Especially Polars and Grizzlies) and cougars over hear.:(

I'm sure its costly for the hunter. And where the funds go is a grey area...those countries aren't exactly reaping the benefits. The corrupt government officials and companies that offer the hunting safaris likely see all the $.

also, i know that some countries (like south africa) have or used to have problems with elephant overpopulation

Exactly. Most of the hunting is in areas of overpopulation. It's just far too expensive to relocate so many of these large animals.

Average cost for elephant hunt is 25-50k and they only shoot special marked animals that are to old to breed and at end of there time, well atleast this is what they say. Most of money and all meat will go to local village and to nature preserves for funding. All hunters need special permits and they cost a fortune for something like this. It is all controlled now for most part.

very interesting. I knew they wouldn't openly flaunt shooting elephants if it were illegal. Thanks for the information
