Hey need some info

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks to those of you who are proving that you don't need a 5,000,000,000 GPH pump on a 10 gallon. It should be noted that the higher turnovers (over 5x IMO) are really for saltwater setups. There are exceptions, but the norm for freshwater fish originating in slow moving native waters is about 2x or 3x.

Turnover is for cleaning, not necessarily for current, if you keep MONSTERS you need it, guppies not so much...

I still waiting for two examples...tic toc...:D

yes, but you can't put a 550GPH pump on a 55 and not have high currents  Unless there is some strange device that can push 550gph and not create current! Also, these W/D designs need to have a balance. You can't push 1200GPH through a 20gal w/d and have enough contact time with the bacteria to work correctly. In researching the ever loving ba-jesus out of koi ponds, I've learned that it's better to have less flow, or correct flow through the BB box as opposed to having a ton of flow.

Sure you can...

Strange device = shallow well point, not so strange, softens water flow immensely for a do-able 10x turnover.

Return water thru a sponge filter, simular outcome.

Now HOW did we get to a 60x turnover?! I think we may have found out who suggests these high output pumps :screwy:.

You are correct in saying a longer 'dwell' time is better for the bacteria to work.

Koi ponds are a different animal from aquariums. Ponds have far more surface area for off gassing, more areas to grow bacteria to help with ammo/nitrite reduction. Correct flow is right..less flow (dwell time) doesn't necessarily help support more bacteria growth.

Plus koi don't like high currents.

If you haven't gussed, one of my pet pieves is the "look how big my pump is" complex. I just hate seeing people suggesting 8x turnover on tanks with fish coming from slow to still waters. We don't know what he has in the tank yet though. We'll have to start a "turnover rate debate" thread.

I just don't seem to see these braggarts on here...sure you got the right forum?

Debate...

Been done already, Do a search on here.

Thanks guys on the help. My stock is two oscars and thats it. Looking for suggestions on sizing for the sump and turnovers. I have a 20 gallon long sitting around that i could possibly use as the sump.Would taht be enough or should i go with a rubber maid box so that i can cover it with a top. Being new to this things i just want sizes really i can handle all the plumbing being i do that work for a living. Also what kind of apparatus do i use to get the water back in the tank? spray bar?

A 20g will be fine and you can still use it if you upgrade your tank to a 100g just need a larger pump & siphon/overflow.

If oyur going to stay with the two Oscars only 3x-5x turnover will be great, so a 200gph-350gph pump AT the particular head you have your return at (distance from pump to the top of the tank).

You can get a pre-made cover for the 20g or Lowes-HD sells lexan/acrylic sheets you can cut to fit (into sections if you want and cut holes for the pipes and tubes). Use unions at the sump for your pvc connections, if you need to take the sump out to clean you really appreciate them.

A spray bar will get you good surface aggitation / aeration, or you can split the return and put one high and one low to direct water around for a current and to move dirt towards the overflow/siphon. Or you can do both (may need a little stronger pump (another 75gph?)).

I agree. Massively huge pumps are the way to go! My koi pond has a Mercury 350 outboard to create a little circulation. Really gives the little critters an incentive to get some exercise :banhim: (btw, that's two examples: you and me)

Ok, so seriously, I have nothing to add except pot scrubbers can be bought pretty cheap at Big Lots if there is one in your area. Here they are .75 for a six pack. Saving an additional 25% adds up when you are stocking a large wet/dry or sump.

Cool tanks for the info. I got my final design planned. The wife decided she wants a small reef tank to the 20 is gonna be that. Planning on using a tupperware bin and som 5 gallon buckets for the media. The only thing i lack is a pump. anysites i can go to?? I looked at some of the LFS around here but no luck. Also any one have pic's of there return in the tank and/or the spray bar set ups?? just to get and idea. And should 3/4 pipe work for both intake and return??
