I knew the title would catch your eye, what kind of 'racks' were you looking for? lol

I see so many questions about people asking if they can use the premade metal racking found in your typical stores to do tanks on and my answer is YES! Most manufacturers will say not to do it... Why? These are not really designed for this and they are not the most level or even support the tank frame without some modification but Im just sharing my set up and maybe it can inspire others.

I will start with my choice and that was the Dewalt racking. I liked the general size and set up of it. I know you guys always want pictures so I will start with them.

This is my current set up as of today, it tends to evolve over time.

The current tanks are 90 gallons on the top left and right, 65B on the bottom left and right and a 46g bowfront in top center and a 30 gallon (36x12 footprint) in the center bottom.

Using these racks presented a challenge they are in no way set up for putting tanks on as is. They have to be modified. I will show you guys some things I did to accomplish this.

Look closely at how the 90's are sitting on the top... I had to make sure they were adequately supported. This required my buddy to bring over a planer and run boards through to create the perfect spacers to support the weight

Also to make 3/4" plywood 'tops'

All of this was edge banded and painted with a exterior grade paint

Like I said its been evolving... the set up started with 75's that were upgraded to 90's and the center tanks too changed as can be seen by early pics. The 30 became a 46g bowfront and the center storage was removed in favor of moving the 30 gallon below.

Rack changed out to accommodate more tanks, 30 moved to bottom and the 46 bowfront up top

I wanted the bow to actually stick out so I made a custom shelf for that

Anyway there is a lot more to tell but I want to start this so that others too would share their metal premade rack set ups.

Lets see what you got!

A couple of "other" pics

Did my set up to have storage under the tanks, typical under bed storage bins

An older pic, but now have all matching Beamswork lighting

Tried to add power strips in areas where I needed them

Did some finishing touches on the ends, capped off ends

Here are the measurements of the rack so you can see challenges faced in setting it up

Great use of those fixtures. They remind me of the type of shelving I've seen in places like Home Depot and Sports Authority. Is that setup in your basement?

Thank you, this is my garage set up. I have a utility sink on the other side of the room so it is easy to do general tank maintenance. I tapped into the furnace so I have heat and cool in the garage too. So even in the dead of winter it is pretty comfortable with it being too cold.

I like the racks, your modifications, and the resulting fish room. Very cool!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I see so many questions pop up about these different metal racks that I figured I should start up something so that people get ideas and hopefully have others share their set ups too.

Wanted to add some thoughts. Glad I did the bottom tanks up off the floor (apx. 12"), a bit easier to work on. Also leaving at least a 10" gap between the tanks is a must. I can pull out my Aquaclear 110's to maintain without a ton of issues.

The top tanks are easy to maintain with gravel vacs easily done with gravity feed to the utility sink. The bottom tanks absolutely require a python valve to do them. I also can just open up the garage door and drain tanks to the lawn.

I made these to drain the top tanks to the exact level I want if I just change out water without a vac.

This I made up to just drain bottom tanks
